a little complaint, a little annoucement, a little meme...

First, the somewhat plaintive rant: I don't like having more reading than I can handle. And when it comes down to it, it isn't the fact that I have to rush to get it done and oh-I-hate-homework and all that. I think what my greater problem is, is that when I read something, I want to really read it. The reason I love reading books in groups is for the deep reading and the discussions that come out of that, when we've all actually read the thing. And it seems, in college, that teachers shove huge piles of reading on us just so we get the basic information, without giving us the time to really understand it. I suppose that's the problem with survey classes--breadth not depth. But I have two chapters of Cohn and twenty eleven-pt font pages from the internet to read (wha?) for tomorrow, plus art history. And the teachers have actually said it, too--just skim it, don't worry about reading everything really carefully--and that's what bothers me. I want to read it carefully. I like reading things carefully. And it annoys me when I can't.
But I can't keep complaining, because, well, I have homework. Oy.

Secondly: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (the Gene Wilder movie) at midnight on FRIDAY at the Egyptian. Who's coming with? I figure we can go as a sort of pre-cursor to the summer Wonka party. *squee!*

Thirdly:

(Stolen, with a bit of tweaking, from [livejournal.com profile] katmaxwell...

a. Post a list of 15 fandoms [books, movies, etc].
b. Have your friends list guess your favourite character from each one, with a short sentence on why they think you like that character.
c. When guessed, bold the line, include the character name, and write a sentence about why you like that character.

Le Fandoms:
(Ok. Because I am not an internet-fandom geek to a full extent, I only have ten eleven at the moment (the repeats don't count!). Yeah. Actually some of these I have more than one favorite...but oh well. I'm just interested in what everyone thinks, haha.)

1. Good Omens -- [livejournal.com profile] countcomfect--Aziraphale. Partly, he is the sort of person I'd like to be when I grow up, and partly he's the sort of person I'd love to live with. Also, Adam. Because he's the (incredibly) perfect blend of Divinely-Diabolical Powerful Being, and normal sneaker-wearing, curious kid.

2. Harry Potter --[livejournal.com profile] neoweezel --Remus J. Lupin. He has such a rich character for someone we don't see all that often, and even through Harry's biased narration there's such a sense of sadness and incredible strength. Also he's a puppy, so points all round for that, and I'm a sucker for the fandom chocolate-obsessed Moony. :)

3. Alias --[livejournal.com profile] thequig Marshall. He's hysterical, he's brilliant, he's just enough of an outsider for me to feel a little sorry for him. Also, two words: Last episode. Marshall joining the ranks of cool-spy-daddy just rocked.

4. Neverwhere (book)--[livejournal.com profile] countcomfect--Door. Because she's awesome, she's completely real while still having crazy-ass powers, she isn't perfect but still amazing, and I totally want to be her. Hee.

5. Neverwhere (movie)* --[livejournal.com profile] countcomfect (my god, Philip, you know me way too well, ok?)--Marquis de Carabas. One (hyphenated) word: Scene-stealer.

6. Red Dwarf--,lj user="countcomfect"> Lister. His accent is brilliant. Plus, he's so earnest all the time.

7. Blackadder--[livejournal.com profile] klatukatt--Baldrick. He's a wonderful incarnation of the completely-oblivious-and-yet-occasionally-smart character, and he's such a brilliant straight man. So. Funny.

8. Enchanted Forest Chronicles--[livejournal.com profile] countcomfect--Morwen. I think Philip said it right: Cats. Magic. Spells. Coolness. Something like that. Also I have identified with her since sixth grade, so.

9. Lord of the Rings (books)--[livejournal.com profile] countcomfect--Samwise Gamgee. Because he's utterly devoted to Frodo, incredibly caring and sweet, and unfailingly practical at the same time (remember the cooking pots?).

10. Lord of the Rings (movies)--[livejournal.com profile] countcomfect--Faramir. I didn't really like him when I saw Two Towers in the theaters, and then the extended edition came out and he just about broke my heart. That expression on his face just before he goes off and nearly dies just slays me every time.

11. Sandman-- [livejournal.com profile] klatukatt--Death. I just love her. She reminds me a little of Morwen, actually, if Morwen were cheerful and gothy and owened a goldfish and lived forever. She's practical and knows exactly what to say. Also, she's adorable.

* Yes, they're different. No, it isn't cheating to have both. Neener. *grin*

Nothing. They were ALL GONE when I went at 10:20 to go and get one. They were GONE IN TWO HOURS.

And they would have been entirely free.

So if somehow I get ahold of two of them I'll tell you, and it will cost you nothing.

:seethes:

TWO HOURS? AARGH.

[identity profile] elanor-two.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, I LOVE Sark. Especially lately, with the leather jacket and the bottle of bubbly. Mmmmm, yes please.

...but actually, no. Not my utter favorite. :)

[identity profile] elanor-two.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope! Ehehehe...

Re: !

[identity profile] katmaxwell.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Though honestly, I think I'm going to show up on the 20th and see if they let me in anyway. I never believe everyone who takes a ticket will show up. I hope.

:seethes again:

All gone?
Jeez. Practically faster than tickets for a U2 concert. Buggeralle.
Ah well...if you manage to sneak in, take notes for me. :D

[identity profile] thequig.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
3. Jack Bristow...actually I change my guess...(although I'm kind of cheating taking two guesses here). Irina Derevko.

9. Tom Tom Bombadil (complete guess)

[identity profile] thequig.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Minus one Tom...

[identity profile] elanor-two.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Jack Bristow is a manipulative, lying little bastard. So, no. :)
IRINA! OMG Irina is COMING BACK IN MAY! *squee*
But not her either.

Hint: Think last episode...

[identity profile] elanor-two.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and no, not Tom Bombadil either. Keep guessing! :D

[identity profile] thequig.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
MARSHALL! I shall not be denied.

By the way, you're a comment whore. =)

[identity profile] elanor-two.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
YES! "Hush, little baby, don't you cry, daddy's gonna sing about laptanides..."
How can you NOT love Marshall, honestly?

Um. Yes. I know. :D

[identity profile] countcomfect.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm... those chatty nuns in the hospital? I'm reaching here ;). Or perhaps the medium.

And LOTR... Faramir?

[identity profile] elanor-two.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope! Hint: look at Katmaxwell's comments. She got it generally.

Yes! For the movies. :D

[identity profile] countcomfect.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Figgered for the movies... hmmm (again)...Treebeard?

Newton Pulsifer was what katmaxwell guessed, no? How about Anathema Device?

[identity profile] elanor-two.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
No, not that one. Her other guess. (Think young. *snerk*)

Nope, not Treebeard.

[identity profile] countcomfect.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Red Dwarf - Kryten?

[identity profile] countcomfect.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm... the Antichrist?

OK, trying to think of who you'd like in the books but NOT the movie... Eomer?

[identity profile] elanor-two.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Adam, yes. :)

Nope. Well, I like them very much in the movie as well, they were brilliant. I just liked Faramir a bit more in the movies.

[identity profile] elanor-two.livejournal.com 2005-04-06 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. Although he is hilarious. We need a Red Dwarf party. I'm feeling deprived. :)

[identity profile] countcomfect.livejournal.com 2005-04-07 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Then it better not be Arwen, 'cause Liv Tyler sucked ;)
Gandalf?

[identity profile] countcomfect.livejournal.com 2005-04-07 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
David Lister?

[identity profile] elanor-two.livejournal.com 2005-04-07 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yez. I love Lister. His accent makes me so happy. :D

[identity profile] elanor-two.livejournal.com 2005-04-07 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Nope.

[identity profile] countcomfect.livejournal.com 2005-04-07 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
There are too many characters! Frodo?

[identity profile] elanor-two.livejournal.com 2005-04-07 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
No, but closer.
