quickly, quickly, mistress
May. 27th, 2008 11:51 amFolklife! I managed to go three days, each with a different feel. I met up with lots of people; heard all kinds of music, celtic foremost (Jamie Laval & Ashley Broder!); danced a little salsa & a little bellydance & a little zoned-out reggae; saw too many adorable dogs (I want one!) & a ridiculously cute kitten (I want one!) & several cute children (...don't really want one, thanks); browsed shops upon shops; & ate, of course, a lot of food. Expect a large picture post soon (just for you, Leeann!)
I am not at all happy with the shooting that happened on Saturday. I was inside the Center house listening to ghost stories so I only heard about it later...but it was horribly unsettling. I always had an image of Folklife as the peaceful, mellow place where none of that stupid stuff goes down. I guess up until now it was. I sort of worry what changes will happen for next year on account of this. Errrgh.
In other news I also made a "white" model of my set. I say "white" because it isn't made out of white matboard, it's made of plastic straws & toothpicks and leftover foamcore and glue and a shit ton of tape. It's quite possibly the ugliest thing I have ever made in my life, & I don't care--I find it sort of amusing, & since it's a prelim model just for space volume considerations, it doesn't have to look pretty. It's still funny though.
Also, I am going to be in Open Circle's Alice in Wonderland in the park! I am super excited about this, a) because it's a park show & b) because it's with Open Circle. Apparently it is my goal now to do all of their shows, because I also want to do their HP Lovecraft Halloween show in the fall. Hey, I'm okay with that. I like them all.
& now I have to go print things & research things & do homework.

Yesterday (after sleeping in, which my god is wonderful) I spent several hours in the design studio crafting things out of foamcore. Once I get into the swing of it all, it's actually pretty fun, and it's incredibly satisfying to fit things together & have them work, and to pin and glue and wield sharp exacto knives into unsuspecting paper. Of course I'm making all the choices that makes my model-building harder--I want to use the catwalk, & I'll be hanging things from the grid, which means I need to build both of those instead of leaving them to the imagination. And I want to use the windows in the back wall instead of covering them up with drapes, & since I don't actually have any measurements except those from the groundplan (so I don't know how tall they are or how high off the ground), I had to make it up, & then sneak into the Lee Center during Maureen's tech rehearsal in order to estimate by peeking into the theater from a side-door.
But still. I love having the finished model box, a 1/4" scale empty theater that I could fill with anything I wanted. It's pretty thrilling.
Today I go to read for Inherit the Wind...am still waiting on emails for Alice in Wonderland. I need to know schedules! Oh so much theater. And after that is FOLKLIFE! Never mind that my throat hurts & I sound like a frog-lady & every once in a while I cough like the world is ending. I don't care. Folklife!

could you just revise it for me?
May. 26th, 2007 11:21 pmThe trouble with having a built-in wireless card, instead of one I can remove & hide, is that it makes it really hard to get off the internet and revise my thesis.
I am so close to being done! There's just a couple sections I need to ponder & add words to (& one citation I want to put in that I cannot find for the life of me & it's really frustrating), & Mum's going to copy-edit, & it's due Tuesday. I'm pretty proud of it, really, but I will be very glad to have this thing done with.
ALSO I went to Folklife today, & I was a little dynamo of energy for most of it--I literally couldn't sit still & I kept yelling about things excitedly (when I saw Melissa I actually just yelled--or maybe squawked--for about three minutes, because I couldn't say anything, because I was too excited). There was good food, & seeing many many wonderful people, & music and contradancing & finding pretty things at the Uncommon Market with Cozy & getting henna (which is really not coming out very strong, rrgh) & basically just soaking in the beauty that is the atmosphere of Folklife. I'm going back tomorow evening (I have to do homework all day) to see umissable music (The McKassons! Jamie Leval, guys! Seriously, go), & then, assuming that homework-doing was successful, all day Monday. YES.
...so I should really get back to that thesis. Three more days, then this is off my hands forever!
