"space is closer than portland."

Dude--science is infinetely awesome. I just got back from Third Place, where the president of LiftCorps (I think that's what it's called) talked--that's the company that's making the space elevator. By which I mean, yes, an elevator into space. Rock on. I took notes because I am a geek.
--Carbon nanotubes--proven 20 times stronger than steel; ridiculously expensive but becoming more used--in future will see them for cars, buildings...
--also NASA has a plan for cleaning space debris: bubblewrap. I kid you not. They put big ol' spools of bubblewrap into space adn the debris hits the wrap, slowing down & losing energy as it passes through and pops each bubble. I think this is hilarious, but the fact that it could work is just awesome.
-Solar panels in space will be darkened only 90 days of the year--talk about uberenergy source.

This is cool. Why am I not a scientist? (Oh yeah...no patience.)

The name of the company

I doubt you know me - I work for Liftport, but live in Wisconsin.

How did I find your post? I have an RSS feed from icerocket.com that very neatly finds all mentions of (among other items) Liftport and there you were.

Um, dude. That tech's been bandied about for 30+ years. Cool if they're actually building it, of course.

I know...the cool bit is that they ARE.
I want to have my thirtieth birthday party in space. :D
