disjointed commentary on r+j
Oct. 25th, 2005 03:53 pmSaw Baz Luhrman's Romeo + Juliet. Was...bizarre, as is usual of Luhrman. Was kind of disappointed as I really like Strictly Ballroom and Moulin Rouge, but overall I didn't really like this one.
I did like Claire Danes as Juliet; I thought she was sweet but with moments of good intensity, very good for what she was given. I didn't like what she was given. He cut practically all her speeches! There's no more character there to latch onto anymore...man. I didn't like that at all.
I liked Tybalt, actually. Courageous captain of complement, indeed.
I didn't like Mercutio as a drug-addict drag queen, sadly. It pretty much ruined his point for the play, for me. I liked the actor, though; I liked what he did in his death scene. I didn't get the relationship, though; I feel like he was too tripped out for too long for me to get that he and Romeo really are best friends--it seemed more like drug buddies.
I liked the aquarium meeting; I thought it was adorable. (Juliet in that one part reminded me a little of River.)
I didn't like thebalcony pool scene. No no. For me the point was that they weren't floating there making out with each other; that they can't touch each other. Makes it...I dunno, more real on a different level, maybe? Not sure what I mean. Didn't like it though.
The death scene....ahaha, so sad! So frustrating! It always makes a little bit of me die with versions that have Juliet waking up to see Romeo die...*whimper* I did like the death scene.
Didn't like the script. Wtf was going on? Too many weird cuts and appropriations of lines and what-have-you. So yeah, sadly...overall I didn't like it. Ah well.
Feel free to argue with me. I want to see Zeferelli's version now. And I'm really excited to see SSC's. Huzzah!
We had an awesome discussion in class about the text though; and now I really want to play Juliet. Really really. Like, now. Somebody put that play on. And cast me. Heh.
