Oh, Aristotle.
Jan. 25th, 2006 08:26 pm"A 'whole' is something which has a beginning, a middle and an end. A 'beginning' is what does not necessarily have to follow anything else, but after which something naturally is or happens; an 'end,' the other way round, is what naturally is after something else, either of necessity or usually, but has nothing after it; a 'middle' is what comes after something else and has something else after it. Well-constructed plots, therefore, must neither begin at an accidental starting-point nor come to an accidental conclusion, but must have followed the principles we have given." -Aristotle's Poetics, trans. George Whalley
I really like how incredibly detailed and precise he can be in parts, and then in others just pass over random information. Damn those thousands of years' separation... [And really, if it were only that easy in writing, how much less agony we might have...]
In addition, I really like new friends. I really like new friends who are outwardly friendly and get me to come eat dinner with them and their friends, because I know for god's sake I don't make overtures. Also I like new friends who are crazy theater people. (Am I finding them? I know they're there...)
And I have a topic for lit--looking at Werther using Aristotle's writings on Tragedy (hence the above), to see how much it conforms, and what that answer tells us about Goethe / The Romantic Period / Whatever I Want To Talk About. Yeah, wahey...
AND And, the sun was incredibly gorgeous this morning, and I sat by the window and felt warm and golden; and everyone was in a delighfully silly mood because of the weather, and we had a wonderful Political Theory class because the professor is the best (because he finds us amusing--I'm pretty sure that's why it goes so well). And I went to Dr. Tadie's class to talk about the W.C. this morning, which meant a) seeing Dr. Tadie, and b) getting up early. I got out of bed before seven (6:59 to be exact) and therefore Danica owes me those horrible toll-house break-and-bake cookies (which are nonetheless delicious). Because we bet on it, yes; that's how little faith she has in my ability to be up early, ehehe. But that also meant I got to see the sun rise out our newly-restored lounge window (the lounge...not the window). And I realized that however sleepy I get for an hour in the afternoon, I always wake up later, and it's completely worth it every once in a while to watch the sky lighten, an impercepibly swift shades of blue, and the strange wash of rising sunlight which is utterly unlike any other kind of sunlight. I'd forgotten....
