I think that was maybe the best birthday I've ever had. It started with humongous omelettes and culinary experimentation (involving rehydration, so you know it's good times), & then Joel & I went to the Aquarium--there were otters (I love otters, I love how they play all the time) & seals & the underwater dome & circling jellyfish & an amazing octopus, & it was all very kid-like & joyful. I skipped a lot. We ate fish & chips & splashed in the puddles & wandered through the arcade & the pirate store & along the waterfront in the rain.
We took the bus back to my parents' house so the parents could take me out for a drink, because they insisted on it, it being my 21st birthday and all.
Also I did not suspect a thing.
Dad bought me beer & his was a lot tastier than mine, but we sat in the 3rd place pub & drank & talked & Joel snuck in, & then we had to leave so Mum could get to rehearsal. We're walking back through the park & I'm thinking out loud about where I should go, maybe back to the apartment to make those cookies I finally have all the ingredients for, & Joel is saying, very waffly, "yeah...maybe..."
& still, I do not suspect a thing.
So when I walk in the front door & a bunch of my friends jump out at me & yell SUPRISE! ...well, it was. I was pretty much babbly & incoherent for about five minutes. But thank you, guys...it was fabulous, & wonderful, & full of people I adore.

Today was good too (except for a chunk in the middle that involved too much driving & too much airport & too little food). The Arcadia meeting was productive & fun, even with (especially with?) the long tangent about beer, which ended up in me buying my own first legal alcohol--to give to the theater. Pssh, quiet, the kids didn't drink it. Lisa the box office woman drank it. But Noel gets the bottle for props. I am still amused.
& then I introduced Joel to Chocolati, since I was fairly ashamed that I hadn't done so earlier, & we sat & drank hot chocolate & got photographed by a woman from Australia, who was a painter, & was collecting images to paint. It was sort of flattering & sort of embarrassing & really lovely, actually. I wish I had her name...

& I really should sleep, seeing as I have to go to the teeth people tomorrow early. But in conclusion, should you get a chance, go see Twelve Angry Men at the Paramount, because it is phenomenally amazingly superlative-inducing good.
