Oh my god, they're against me! Fantastic!
Nov. 21st, 2008 04:49 pmA short entry, since the library will kick me out in ten minutes, but I have to say:
I am now doing theater that people are protesting! I'm so excited!
Okay, okay, so they're not protesting it. They're asking, fairly nicely, about how it reflects our values. But they're obviously not pleased about it! Right? Yes. Here's how it went down: Last week, our ridiculous school paper, the Spectator, did an article on The Vagina Monologues & interviewed me & Cozy & Stephanie, & talked a little about the play, etc. It was good publicity.
And then this week, a commenter on the online article was quoted in the back of the paper: "I don't understand how this play demonstrates the Jesuit Mission. See what Providence College stated on the subject (below). I would like the school president to respond."
What an opportunity, think I. I wrote a reply comment (comments are here, if you're interested, & you know you are), which got very long since I went overboard & explained everything in great--& very polite--detail.
Katie told me that in the past people have threatened to protest the show (although that's never actually happened). It just makes me happy to do theater that people are starting debates over. Obviously, something must be going right. :D
