I am in Cozy's room...we just finished a ouija (an ouija?) session that was the most amazing conversation I've ever had with the afterlife. (Well. Considering this is basically my third conversation with the afterlife or whatever one calls it, I'm not running on much, but it was awesome.)
He was a 91 year old when he died, in 1971, in New Mexico. We chatted for a while, asking test questions (he got my highschool nickname & Cozy's middle initial), just asking random questions--he was married, with two children, & he was a dentist. We asked if he had a message for us, but he said no, he just wanted to chat. He was really specific, & very fast between letters--no lagging or being confused, very very clear & quick.
Cozy asked if he knew where she was going to study abroad: M-I-L-A-N, he spelled out.
Then we asked about theater (seriously, dorkiest ouija question I ever heard)--whether there was going to be Shakespeare while Cozy & I were here.

He said yes.
We asked what play.
R-O-M-
"Romeo and Juliet?" I ask. "Are we going to do Romeo and Juliet?"
YES.
"Can you tell us any roles?"
Yes.
"What will Kenna be?" asks Cozy.
J-U-L-
"Juliet?" I say (probably squealing). "You're saying I'm going to be Juliet?"
YES.
"Will Cozy be in the play?" I have to ask. "Who will she play?"
N-U-R
"The Nurse?" At this point we're talking over each other. "Awesome! Fantastic! Thank you!" Cozy asks who will direct.
R-O-S
"ROSA?" At this point I am essentially gleeful. "Rosa's going to direct?"
YES.
We ask about more cast members: "Who else is going to be in it?"
C-A-S-E-Y
"Casey! Who will he play?" we ask.
R-O-M-E
"Romeo? Casey's playing Romeo?" Cozy says. "Just like my dream!" I say. "I dreamt about this yesterday, did you know that?"
YES.
"Uh..." I said. "Wow. Um."
We got the rest of the cast list through breathless questions & guesses, spilling out characters or names of our friends, with the ouija board skipping from letter to letter to YES & back again:
Damian is the Prince & Mercutio; Andy is Lord Montague; Phoebe Lady Montague; Molly is Lady Capulet; Lord Capulet is a new boy, with ZN as initials, or maybe NZ; Lisa was a fighter & the prologue & maybe something else; Perez was Tybalt; Rashad was Paris; Sean was the Apothecary.
"I wonder if Rosa's already thinking about this," Cozy says to me. I ask the board:
YES, it says.
At this point we're essentially dorky gleeful theater geeks, squealing about Shakespeare while trying to keep shaking hands on a ouija piece.
We asked again if he had a message, & after some prompting & confusion he spelled out L-A-V-E.
"Love?" We asked. "Did you mean to say love?"
YES.
Cozy asked another few questions about me, & then asked if anyone was in love with her. YES, says the board. "Who?" we ask.
P-E-
"Oh, you've got to be kidding me," Cozy interrupts.
R-E-Z, the board finishes.
"Perez? Perez is in love with me?"
NO.
"Wait," I ask, "romantically in love?"
NO.
"So like a family."
YES.
"Okay," I ask, "I don't know if they had this term in 1917, but do you know what having a crush on someone is?"
YES.
"Awesome. So does anyone have a crush on Cozy?"
YES.
"Who?"
P-E-R-E
"But you said--"
"Wait. Does Perez have a crush on Cozy?"
NO.
"So does anyone like me romantically?"
"Have a crush on her?" I add.
YES.
"Who?"
P-E-R
"Oh, for the love of god," Cozy says.
I'm getting suspicious. "Wait," I ask. "Are you teasing us?"
YES! (I add the exclaimation point for how happily the piece swept toward YES.)
"Oh, please," Cozy bursts out. "So what about Romeo and Juliet? Was that true?"
NO.
"Oh, no, really?" I ask, completely disappointed.
YES.
I am no medium, but I know this ghost is having fun making fun of us.
"Well, can you be serious with us?" Cozy asks, although we're both laughing at this point.
YES, the board says, & then: GOODBYE.

It was hilarious & amazing...sort of like being teased by your grandpa, who just wants to hang out with you for a while. He said he wasn't from around here, but I kinda hope he comes back or that we can contact him again.
Katie & Colleen are coming now...hopefully there will be other amazing conversations. Haha! So much fun! I have never quite done this before...

ETA, the next morning: We had more conversations. It's actually really exhausting, talking to whatever it is that's going on, thinking of questions. I left the room during one conversation to talk to Joel for a long while, sitting in the Bellarmine lounge by the windows. When I got back the girls & Andy were deep in intent conversation with someone they called "AB" who I gathered had died of AIDS, fairly recently (1997). They were asking about crushes & drama drama & various other similar things & as far as we could tell--since we kept asking--AB was having as much fun chatting about all these things as we were. It was really truly bizarre. What was even weirder was when Cozy's roommate got home & we had to move, & we told AB, We're going to the basement, same building, is that okay? Can you find us? YES, says the board. & when we get to the basement & sit down & ask, Are you there, AB? it shoots right to YES. ...so this guy really liked to talk...altogether I think he was talking to us for a couple hours.
People asked many many questions...mostly about relationships & their future, which I mostly exempted myself from since I discovered that I really don't want to know; & even if I did get an answer, I wouldn't know whether to believe it or not. Weird...
