Things I Love:

* OUR NEW APARTMENT seriously it's the greatest, it's in the most lovely neighborhood and I can walk to all these wonderful places and walk to work in five minutes and my room is so light and our kitchen has a new stove and a lazy susan in the cupboard (!) and our bathroom somehow got lime-green themed by accident and we still don't have blinds but it's coming together even though we have piles of stuff everywhere still and i'm not done moving but it's SO GREAT GUYS I LOVE IT.

* Fall Potluck parties with friends: seeing lots of people I adore, watching silly movies and videos, eating amazingly delicious food (pasta with bacon and pumpkin, pumpkin pie cake, sweet potato casserole, deviled eggs, molasses bread and cheese, and spiced cider mimosas... oh be still my heart).

* Having writing buddies for Nano. It's been supremely helpful to send giant piles of notes and get really good questions back. But oh, lord, this planning process is driving me nuts. I think I've got it and then I try to write an outline and realize I don't and... agh. Nano. I know, secretly I love it, but... *sigh*

Innogen and the Hungry Half, speaking of writing! Written by my friend Esther of Magpie and Whale, and oh boy is this one fun: Shakespeare and intrigue and steampunk and yes, please. There's just two chapters so far, so it'll be quick to catch up. Do it!

* &etc: Nanda; delicious food at the Elysian; warm sweaters; how light my computer is!; fresh apples and cheese.

Holy what, it's nearly October? Good lord. And it's Thursday--time for another TiLT post!

*Fall Weather. It's actually unseasonably warm today, which I am perfectly well pleased with, but I'm really enjoying the transition to fall weather. I love the bluster of the wind, I love rain (yes, really, when it's in a season change like this), I love the way sunlight changes to be a little crisper. Gorgeous.

*Clothing swaps. So great! I took a couple bags of clothes I didn't want anymore/didn't fit anymore over to Meg's place, and a bunch of us sorted through things and found new things and then dumped all the rest in the nearby Goodwill bin. I got a couple fabulous dresses, a new shirt and hoodie, new sailor jeans, legwarmers, and a new purse, all for the grand price of getting-rid-of-other-stuff. Greatest way to shop ever? Yes. Yes I think so. (Plus: good time hanging out with ladies and eating tasty snacks.)

*Planning the new apartment-home. I can't quite put "our new apartment" on this list yet since we're still waiting for final approval, but our nearly-landlord basically told us we had it, pending hearing back from Patrick's current landlord. I'm holding off on celebrating just yet, but... yeah, it's basically ours. And I'm super excited about it!

*Adventures in good storytelling. Aka, getting locked in a paintshop with the gentleman when we went to go base all the platforms for his set. The shop is shared with another company, and we didn't have the key to get back out of the shop into the offices. I tried to pick the lock (which I really need to learn how to do properly), but we escaped when the gentleman took a different door off its hinges. Truth! I'm not sure I would say I loved it at the time, but it was pretty funny and it makes a great story now. (Still, I'm gonna get on that lock-picking...)

*Baths. The house I'm sitting for has a gorgeous claw-foot tub and I've been using it to relax the last couple of nights, and, well, yes please. Lying in hot water and bubbles is pretty much the best way to end the day, especially if your day included your first aerial lesson in a month. Ow.

*&etc: finding new marinades and new recipes that make excellent leftovers; spice cake frozen yogurt, no i'm not kidding and yes it was delicious; cleaning off my work desk; trader joe's peanut-butter crackers; the oxford comma.

Things I Love:

*Game Nights! I had a handful of friends over this week to the fancy house I'm sitting for, and we played a new board game, and then a few rounds of Mafia. I love: seeing awesome people, learning new games, eating tasty food, making terrible jokes, having lots of fun.

*Fluffy cats! See this photo. Yep. This is one of three fluffy cats I'm taking care of. They are all ridiculous. This one rolls over and high fives for treats, I'm not kidding you.

*Tea. I know this is on nearly every list I do, but holy cats this is getting me through the last few weeks like no other. Last week was the ACT workshop, which was awesome, but tiring. And this week I'm sick (the correlation is not surprising), and tea is helping with that too. Dried leaves steeped in hot water, bless you.

*&etc: the gentleman, for being generally awesome, dancing with me, & helping me through stress and anxiety attacks (he could make every list, too); the house I'm sitting for has a housekeeper who cleans, what is this madness?; Doctor Who Confidential, for giving me hilarious behind the scenes adventures and just making me more jealous of everyone who works on that show; helping fix events with my set design brain; clothes swap today!

Things I Love This Week:

*Swing Dance Class. Oh wow, yes, this is so. much. fun! I vaguely knew the basic step, but it's so excellent to be in a class setting and officially learning it all in a good way. Plus now the gentleman and I can dance swing-ingly (and we did, after class, for about half an hour till my feet gave out--next time wearing better shoes, yep--and it was super fantastic). We're such hep cats. Or something! Plus, this music--I love this music, this whole thing, I just love it. Salsa's like the slinky, shake your ass fun times, and this is the bouncing, push-and-pull, laugh the entire dance fun times. And boy do I love this.

*My intern. I have an intern! She's working with me on youth program marketing/pr and graphic design and school projects--we can finally get all the info into our database and then start cool projects. And there's all kinds of other projects to be done, and ideas that can actually happen now. We had our first training session yesterday, which was basically just a chat about ideas and showing her how to use the database; I still feel weird being "in charge" of somebody, but mostly I'm really excited to be able to work with someone on projects that will make us all better.

*SPT's new seats. They are so shiny and sophisticated and the carpet is new too and everything's looking so much swankier and less run-down and guys, I'm really excited about them. I also think it will help with donations, in that bizarre backwards way where if you look like you're on top of things, people will give you more in donations. In any case, I'm looking forward to the season opening. And comfy seats, yes please thank you.

* Exciting discussions with theater people. Particularly people with whom I will be doing lots of things. I can say no more, but... watch this space. There will be news. (I'm sorry, I'm such a troll... No shame! :))

*&etc: tea and sugar, early morning good dreams, engaging stories on the radio, orange-and-gold nail polish, free cookies in the lobby, vintage posters, gorgeous old photographs.

This is all I ever post here anymore. Oh well! There are worse things to post.

Things I love this week:

* Froyo Wednesdays: Less Alliteration, More Froyo. aka, delicious dessert & hanging out with Patrick in the middle of the workday and daydreaming about our apartment together. In fact that should just be an entire entry:

* Daydreaming about my future apartment. Seriously, I am doing this all the time (even though we haven’t found one yet, even though I’m so poor I literally can’t actually afford to move but am doing it anyway). I keep thinking about how I’m going to set things up, what I’m going to cook in the kitchen, having classy dinner parties, having people over to play games. Feeling like a grown-up again. I can’t wait.

* MTG. I spent the late part of last night playing Magic: The Gathering in a roomful of nerds, some of whom I know and love and some of whom I’d just met. That game is so silly and so fun, and I’m honestly not that great at it, but I enjoy the hell out of it anyway. Now I want to revamp all my decks and create new ones and get back into it. Who wants to play with me?

* ACT. I love this theater. I love pretty much every freaking thing about this theater. I just found out today that we might have discovered my replacement intern (who’s someone I know & love, plus we’re keeping it in the SU family), and surprisingly I’m not as sad as I was earlier about this. Probably because… I am most likely working on a project that involves several workshops, lots of local artists, a stipend, and me being useful to everyone, HELL YES. That hope of this internship getting me other opportunities at ACT? Yeah, it’s happening.

* etc: discovering my talent for 20s-style narration; watching Hamlet with the gentleman and discussing Hamlet with the &@ boys; reading good plays; my delicious casserole that has been lunch every day this week; cuddling with Mowgli, the cat who loves everyone; happy hour sushi;
volunteering at Bumbershoot & getting to see Carbon Leaf play for free (!); books on sale.

Time for another Things I Love Thursday:

*In The Next Room, or the vibrator play at ACT...so incredibly gorgeous, go see it if you're in Seattle--it's worth it, I promise you. Good story & writing, lovely acting, beautiful design, yep, it's a winner all round.

*  Sunny days and sunshine in the windows and blue blue sky with little wispy clouds; oh weather, you can be as cliche as you like for now, please don't stop.

*  New books from the library: I got "The Technology of Orgasm," which I'd been patiently waiting for, and it's fantastic. I'm such an academic-sex-nerd, this stuff is fascinating. It's like an extensions of my nerdy research for the vibrator play, but all historical and bookish and... yeah, I'm glad I'm not in school anymore, honestly, but I should remember how much fun I have dipping into the academic wading pool.

* Corset class! I'm taking a class and sewing a corset and it's very exciting to actually be doing something properly with a sewing machine; I tend to follow patterns haphazardly at best, and then get disappointed when things don't work (uhh I wonder why), impatient at long prep time, and annoyed enough that I don't finish things, so I'm super happy to be working in a class environment that will force me to do it right. Plus my fabric has fish on it!

*Filling out my Gregory Awards ballot. Ok, the actual filling it out part is not the greatest thing I've done (I'm taking better notes next year, holy wow have I forgotten things), but the fact that I get to fill one out as a nominator is pretty darn awesome. And the fact that we have an awards ceremony at all. (Longer discussion, for sure, but: regardless of any issues I have with the ceremony, how it's run, or requirements surrounding it, I do unequivocally like that it raises the estimation of the Seattle theater scene in the eyes of non-theater-makers. This is a good thing.)

*The Gentleman comes back tonight. Yep.

*sprawling on a blanket, reading outside in the shade * finishing a 36-page actor packet full of dramaturgical research * best friend's back in town! friday breakfasts are a go again! * buying new journals on sale * kale chips (oh, so delicious) * cooking dinner for someone else * these robot-in-love coasters * delicious dinnertime catch-ups with old friends * dogs dogs dogs (expect many photos this weekend; i'm dog-sitting for two nights) * cutting a friend's bangs * the doctor who thirty day meme * and tonight is opening night for the vibrator play, and i get to see it with my lovely elspeth!

Another Thursday, another list of things I love:

* flash mobs! there was a dedication of an urban sculpture at the new sheraton right outside ACT, which meant we all had a perfect view of the ladybugs on rollerskates, cute flower umbrellas, and glee flashmob dancing to 'firework.' a good lunch break, and the sun came out right as it happened! (whatever you have to say about seattle sun, it does have good dramatic timing.)

*sandwiches full of delicious things! sometimes i forget how amazing a really well-made sandwich is. today I have one with peppered turkey, bacon, tomato and avocado on amazing wheat bread and oh man it's so tasty. it takes a tiny bit of planning to make a really good sandwich (ie, remembering to have food in the house), but it's worth it.

*happy hour with long-lost friends! well, by long lost I mean I haven't seen them in far too long. I have two soon, one tonight and one Saturday, and I'm so much looking forward to seeing these beautiful people and catching up.

*yoga! specifically, the vinyasa power flow yoga at yoga to the people. I've gone twice this week and it's the first time I've done yoga in years and I think I'm going to go all the time now. the atmosphere is great--casual and encouraging at the same time--and it's donation-based, which means I give more when I have more but don't feel like I have to skip if I'm broke that week. And the flow sequence is full of things that I can do but can push myself on, plus things that are more challenging, plus things that just feel really great to reawake my body into.

*putting holds on exciting new books from the library! oh do I ever love my library. And finding new books that make me all anticipated to read them. On that note, check out my friend's new blog about slate-breaking women in YA fiction: Slatebreakers. Awesome stuff if you are a girl, like girls, read about girls, read at all, know a girl who reads, are a girl who reads, and/or are cool. Which you all are.

& also:

overhearing hilarious things at ACT; silly text conversations; the princess bride kids being adorable and amazing last weekend; being a companion of honor (& calming problems); looking at pretty dresses for said companionship of honor; geeking about doctor who with new people; having my work appreciated--always good for a little self esteem love moment.

So this week was marred by the most ridiculous sunburn I've ever gotten (my legs! my knees!), effectively a. making me feel ill, b. making it very difficult to walk (or move, or sleep), and c. making ice water and washcloths my new best friends. Learned my lesson, never doing that again. Lord.

But a week for a Things I Love List anyway, because that is what Thursday is for! And aside from the sunburn, this week wasn't bad. (It's just that horribly painful legs tend to distract from all the good stuff.)

<3 breakfast for dinner with the girls from stage combat class, including the most epic round of Uno I have ever played <3 bacon <3 seeing my dahling Cozy being hilarious onstage <3 tea at the bakery <3 watching the kidlets making improvements on their stage combat fights <3 to do lists <3 light linen trousers, so comfortable, so summery <3 price tag (my new favorite dumb pop song) playing incessantly on the radio <3 irish breakfast tea <3 holding hands <3 HARRY POTTER 7.2 AT MIDNIGHT TONIGHT, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!*

[*There was no way I wasn't going to make this happen. This is last time, ladies and gents, and I am going. Costumes are mandatory or you ain't getting your ticket, yo. Those are the rules.]

Things I Love Today:

*The Sequence! And my cast, and my director, and my crew, and oh gosh, it's so great to do theater. This play is short and snappy and scary and fun, and I well and truly love everyone involved in it, whether I'm onstage with them or giggling in the lobby or speeding through lines or frantically quickchanging backstage. I'm super proud of this one, guys. (FB event is here--check it!)

*My masks! I can love these now, because I'm DONE, baby. Well, as good as; I have to pop in at some point and do a little sewing on all the hound capes, but that'll take me just a few minutes. I think they're actually pretty good. It's sort of hard for me to tell since I feel like I've had my head buried in them for so long that I can't see what they're really like anymore. But on Sunday I get to sit on a blanket in the park and watch them parade around onstage, for real, and that will be a great satisfaction.

* My bed. It's not at all new, but for some reason I've lately been having a great appreciation for my bed--I'm not sure where it's come from, but there you are. I'm really enjoying how fluffy my comforter is and how freakin' comfortable my mattress is and all my pillows and how my quilt is just the right temperature when it gets too warm at night, and the little lights I have strung up around the headboard (that make me feel like Amy Pond). Who knows. It's the little things.

* Outdoor Theater Season Begins! Oh yes please. This weekend is the Outdoor Theater Festival at Volunteer Park, and I'll be going as much as I can. I have seriously been daydreaming about lounging on a blanket with a picnic watching theater in the park for MONTHS, I'm not even exaggerating here. It makes me so happy and relaxed to just flop on the grass, in the warm summer air, and eat tasty food and drink tasty drinks and watch people perform lovely stories. It's the best.

*& also: teaching kidlets sword combat (oh the agonies and joys), finding a present for someone that they didn't expect; having new dramaturgical projects; people I love getting new opportunities; avocadoes (were they on this list last week? I don't care); open-toed sandals in warm summer grass; that feeling of sticky enervation you get after a long summer day; driving with all the windows down, the sunroof open, and the radio up loud; wearing the same pair of shorts four days in a row because they're perfect; cool showers in the morning; reading an entire YA novel in one day and night; SUMMER!

I'm fighting illness and feeling a little overwhelmed right now, so TiLT is good to have. Maybe all in list form instead of paragraphs, but we'll take what we can get here at the Center for Taking On Too Many Projects.

Things I Love today & this week:

late-night conversations on the porch (keeping warm in the wind); avocados, with almost everything; strawberries fresh from the garden; when kids get excited about learning stage combat; seeing my creations on actors' heads & realizing they'll actually work, mostly like I thought they would; being the crafting queen of staple guns; hot glue, I'm serious, this stuff is magic; rehearsal for The Sequence & my cast mates & our fabulous director & oh yes, this is going to be super fun for this week; awesome books: popular science & victorian sexual attitudes; meeting up with old friends for lunch; people I adore getting engaged.

What do you love today?

Things I love on this grey summer day:

* Opening Nights! Tonight is opening night of Pilgrims Musa and Sheri in the New World at ACT. This play is so good, you guys--it's sweet and funny and true and the talent bursting out of it in all aspects is just phenomenal. I can't wait to see it all put together tonight. Plus there's a party on the patio! And schmoozing at ACT parties is awesome. And tomorrow night is opening of Hedda Gabler, which I designed the set for (and am actually done with!), and that's lower key and less fancy but still fantastic and I love everyone involved.

*Vintage Vibrator Ads! This is what I've been doing at my internship: looking up advertisements and information about vintage vibrators, for the next play this summer. This is so much fun. They are quirky and hilarious most of the time, and it's fascinating to watch modes of advertising vibrators change, and how much the ads dance around the subject of what they are, when everyone knows most of these ladies aren't using them on their face half the time. (See my last three posts for references.)  I'm about to go to the library to look up books to find more photos we can scan. These are conversations I delight to have with librarians!

* Being certified by the S(ociety of) A(merican) F(ight) D(irectors)! That's right, ladies and gents: I have a basic pass in unarmed and broadsword and a reccomended pass in rapier and dagger. The testing went super well, we got to watch the smallsword class test theirs, and then while we all waited for the adjudicator, there was a giant game of chaotic indoor soccer. We were scrambling around the makeshift court, yelling and kicking and having that kind of let-loose gleeful fun that comes after acing a big test. And those that didn't play got all ramped up in the audience, blowing on whistles, yelling "goooooaaaaal" and trying to imitate vuzuvelas. It was perfect.

*&etc: making plans to teach stage combat to middle schoolers; the gentleman helping with the set and being a rigging master; breakfast with my best friend; meeting adorable poodles in the park on my way to the bus; wearing heels all day and feeling classy; eating frozen yogurt for lunch.

What do you love today? (Tell me!)

pipistrellafelix: (Default)

Time for this week's edition of things I love, made more necessary by the fact that I am feeling super harried this week (stage combat adjudication + prepping & painting for Hedda + helping with other designs = too much on top of work).

* Aerial performance. Tomorrow night I'm part of the pre-show for the No Surrender show at Emerald City Trapeze--Simmone's girls (me included!) are going to be up in the air doing ambient hoop in shifts before the real stuff gets underway. This means not a lot of tricks and more slow moving, cool poses, attitude all over kind of performing, which I am all over. First time performing aerial of any kind! Plus the costumes are ridiculous. If there are photos, I will share!  On a mostly-related point, duo aerial is so fun and I want to do more of it.

* Casting. I quite literally forgot that I was going to be in Kelly's Bathhouse Ensemble show this summer until Charlotte sent out the cast list, and it was a nice reminder that I'm going to be on stage with people I love! (Plus the Schmee invited me to audition for their next show, and regardless of casting, being asked always gives me a nice fuzzy feeling.)

*Watching tech for Pilgrims Musa and Sheri. Much of Tuesday I spent sitting in the dark theater watching them tech through the show, and it was both exciting and relaxing to simply sit and watch fantastic artists make beautiful things into a reality. Plus this show is going to be incredible: here is the website, if you are in Seattle, come and see...

*Mystery novels on my phone. I got the Kindle app on my phone nearly on day one, and have been downloading free classics ever since. I worked my way through all of the Sherlock Holmes that the Kindle store could offer me, and am now moving onto Agatha Christie. It's especially fun when I forget to bring a book on the bus or train, get disappointed for a moment and then remember I have five books on my phone. Oh technology, sometimes I do love you.

* &etc: leftover chocolates from Arms and the Man; having allies in adversity; not fighting over things that so many people would; waking up to sun in the morning; tea.

pipistrellafelix: (Default)
Things i Love Thursday:

*Cowboy boots They are helping me feel happier about all this rain, because it means wearing them is not only badass but practical. They are super comfy and warm, and when I wear them with my denim skirt I feel like Amy Pond. Speaking of Amy Pond…

*Doctor Who Obviously. This season has me seriously concerned—so many things are happening! So many questions are raised! So many of them will not get answers! So many cliffhangers will be left… hanging! Damnit, Moffat. I’m really trusting you here, and you better round out S6 with the same amount of heart and flair that S5 had. Of course we have a ridiculous cliffhanger this week (I do like how Moffat et al are not being at all coy about this though), and then all summer to wait for the second half. Oh lord. I’ve also just gotten to S5 in my rewatch with the Gentleman Caller, and oh I love that season. Amy and the Doctor are so beautiful, and Rory is so bumbling, and the Soldier-Daleks are so cute.

* Designing for Theater I feel like…a cool designer, which I never got to do for real before (and by for real, I mean not-for-class) and it’s quite fun. I’ve got groundplans and sketches for the set for Hedda Gabler, which is going to be simple and abstract but hopefully work quite well. And it’ll get painted and pulled together in a frenzy because it’s a BE show, and they always do. (If anyone wants to help me paint, let me know.) And I went to Goodwill and scoured the kitchenware section and got saucepans and colanders and strange wibbly metal implements to bash together and solder into knight helmets for Balagan! Plus papier mache to the max, starting next week. And paint. And getting messy in the name of art. Yes!

* Train trips & travel The weekend before last the Gentleman and I took the train to Portland to visit ma cherie Anna and the city itself, and it was fabulous to travel, especially on a train, which makes me feel tres sophistique, and to have a day of exploring. Portland is wonderful—feels cozy, easy to get around, generally a great atmosphere. I could stand to live there, for sure. Plus I got to see Anna and cavort in a rainy rose garden (sans roses) and introduce the Gentleman to the wonder that is Powell’s, and eat delicious food from food carts, and…and…yes.

&etc:

exhausting myself with Folklife this weekend; my fun new bracelets; waking up to sweet texts at seven am; frozen thin mint cookies; jasper fforde’s newest book; layering nail polish to make new colors; late-night picnics in bed; doctor who novels from powell’s; those sunbreaks we occasionally get.

* Meet and Greets with the ACT staff and production teams. This is seriously so much fun--the cast and production team of the newest show, plus a bunch of ACT staff, plus some board members/donors/friends of the theater all gather in the rehearsal room some morning. There is coffee and tea and bagels and everyone stands in a giant circle and introduces themselves, and then Kurt talks about the play, and the director talks, and the designers get to talk about their plans and show off pictures and models. And then if you want, you can stick around for a read-through. I think theaters should do this all the time. (Plus I still feel like an impostor, in the best and most fun way, standing up there.) We had one this morning for The Prisoner of Second Avenue.

* NEW YORK CITY, BABY. I'm going there at the end of April! I'm going to be gone for a week, and I'm going to see people I love, and explore a city I think I might love after I get to know it a bit more, and see theater I'm already in love with before I've seen it (War Horse, you guys, I'm so excited to see that I might burst). This week I'm gone is pretty much the only time I could get out of town for longer than two days until, oh, Labor Day...so I'm taking it. (Any reccomendations for NYC? Let me know! I'm going to go to the Cloisters this time, dammit, thunderstorm or not.)

* Rocky Horror. Oh I am so proud of this show. I feel like such a fierce beast out there, it's really incredible. We have been getting insanely good feedback from people, our audiences (with one exception) have been with us every step of the way, and our press has been a little mixed but mostly good--and partially baffled, which is my favorite kind of review. ("Uh...wow, I think I liked that...") Our one exception is a stupid, drunken birthday party at our one late-night show, mostly made up of people who probably didn't know what they were in for (even though Monica was clear with them--oh well). But we fought through that entire horrific evening with one of our best shows, and the sight of Terri backstage pumping her fist during the final dance is still one of my favorite moments of this entire run.

*Malcolm Gladwell. Ahren gave me The Tipping Point for my birthday, which I read in about a day, and then last week I caved and bought Blink to share with him. They're super quick reads for me, and it's sort of like general-psychology-lite, but he looks at things with such an engaging cross-cutting way, and I really enjoy reading books like this. (I want to get more engaging nonfiction in my life.)

* This list: 50 Things Every Girl Needs This Summer. I actually don't need at least half of those, and probably want another fifty besides it, but reading that made me feel all glittery and excited for summer and I love that. (Also it would be nice if the sun ever came out and stayed out for more than ten minutes...I swear... it's shining right now, but if it gets cloudy again, I'm gonna...)

&etc:
"Directing is like sex. You never get to watch other people do it, so you're never sure if you're doing it right." - Warner Shook, this morning, quoting Mike Nichols // my fishnets for the show, which are currently more net than fish, which I'm still using // secret conversations on the couch with Emma // the final Pope's speech in Stoppard's Galileo // baking cookies // impromptu movie dates // omg it's so close to doctor who!!!

Things I love:

Tissues with lotion in them, Luden's coughdrops, sleeping until eleven am even if I do have to go to work after anyway.

Things I do not love:
Being sick in a ridiculous manner.

That is all.

A short one, before I run off to help stuff envelopes at SSC, if there are any envelopes left to stuff. We shall see!

* Helping with something secret that will be awesome. And no, I'm not going to say any more than that. Muahaha.

* Figuring out how the heck to dance in giant heels. It ain't easy, folks, but boy it's fun.

* Kittens in bowls. Let me say that again for you: Kittens. In. Bowls. No, I don't have an explanation...and I don't care!

* Having a plethora of theater to go see this weekend. I don't love having to choose what to actually get my ass to and see, but I do love the fact that there is so darn much of it.

* Leftover cold pizza. Seriously, why so tasty?

There may or may not be a Things-I-Don't-Love-Thursday: WTF WORLD edition, but I'm trying to think good things at the moment. Right. Off to stuff envelopes!

pipistrellafelix: (come into my lab)
(NB. I have not posted here since the 12th of August! Well, hello friends. I've decided I'm going to come back and at least do as many Things I Love Thursdays as possible, as an exercise in gratitude, regular journaling, and remembering what makes me happy.)

* The Sun! and it's gloriously beautiful, even more so since the weather has been, in that usual Seattle January-February way, grey and moist and grey. It's still cold, but frost is easier to take in the morning when it's sparkling in the sunlight. It makes everything far cheerfuler. More cheerful. Whatever. :)
Also, I have my gmail theme set to the weather; so when it's sunny outside, my email looks bright blue and sunny, and it makes me much happier about checking it.

Being in a show! I'm in it for a total of one minute, and I have no lines--which means this has been a very low stress rehearsal process for me! Ahaha. It's an excerpt of a play, for GhostLight's Battle of the Bards, and it's going to be a wild rushed performance weekend and then a party and then it's over. Mostly I'm just happy to be around theater people (not that I tend not to be, ever), to work with Cozy and Molly and Suzannah, and to be silly. Yes.

*This Literary Internship Thing. This is not a new entry, except for the fact that I haven't even done a TiLT since I started this internship (six months ago, what). This is amazing. I show up to an incredible theater building two days a week; I read scripts and write reports on them (and if they're terrible I get to be as snarky as I like, which is refreshing); I get to talk about theater all the time. Lately my projects have involved a lot of trips to the Central branch of the library, and a lot of image researching online, both of which feed my dramaturgical ego and make me super pleased; I have been hunting down images from Paul Cadmus and Jared French and finding books for Kurt, and then doing general "get me information about 1972 New York City" research for The Prisoner of Second Ave, which included a whole lot of photoessays and images of advertisements which I find fascinating. It just continues awesome.

*Upcoming Valentine's Day. You think I am going to be soppy about boys? Non, ma cherie, I am much looking forward to Sunday and Monday because of snazzy burlesque and a frenchified dive bar. (Okay, the boy is pretty fantastic too, and I will be the first to admit I'm excited to be going to both these events with him.) Sunday night I finally get to see the Atomic Bombshells do their V-day extravaganza at the Triple Door, and I get to go with two other elves! And Monday night Slap & Tickle* are headlining a Valentine's show at the Blue Moon, which they are somehow converting from a divey cave into a romantic getaway. Who knows. I'm baking cupcakes, that's all I know.

[*Slap & Tickle is Tyson and Kate, respectively, two members of the Christmas band I was in. They play washtub base and ukulele. They rock.]

*My new headshot, because I actually really like it and was afraid I would not. I am fairly terrible at photographs, unless I am performing/an elf; I get awkward and then I usually don't like the results, or tend to do the typical thing of seeing everything wrong with each photo instead of what works. And the day of the shoot, I was not very happy with any of them, more because of myself than the photos. But then I slept on it and got advice on which to pick (since I don't trust myself), and the fabulous photographer put it all together, and...I'm surprised to be quite, quite pleased. I feel professional, I do. Now to get those monologues... ahahaha. (Credit to John Ulman for being amazing and making me look like a star.)

And also....
Going to the Harry Potter exhibition on a date with a cute boy;
the cute boy himself (I tend not to write a lot about this sort of stuff, but, um, yay);
my armwarmers that I made by chopping the arms off a striped sweater;
ridiculous speedthroughs in rehearsal;
this picture, which the boy and i found through stumbleupon and for some reason makes me laugh every time;
post-its--I think my organizational skills at both my jobs would fall apart without them;
making vague plans about life and being motivated by them;
did I mention the sunlight?

So, yeah. Welcome back to the journal...things are going well.

xoxo
