You know what I really hate? When I'm walking home in the dark & words are flowing perfectly through my head--I'm not composing anything, they're composing themselves, & they're amazing--& then when I get home & try to put them on paper they're just not the same words I spoke to myself. I hate that.


You know what I love? Rehersals. God, this is hard stuff. Hard & beautiful & challenging & heady stuff.

God, I know that first feeling. Grr. And its friend, the (it feels like) ONE TIME they actually stay and you get them on paper. Heady stuff.

I second that particular hate. With me it's usually dialogues and then they're witty, and short and to the point, and well, perfect and yet barely anything survives by the time you have reached paper.

Ooo, yeah--in bed, right before sleep, or randomly waking up in the night. & when that happens I'm never totally sure if it was brilliant, or if I just thought it was because I was so sleepy...

My solution? Portable voice recorder. Of any kind. Call your cell with your cell and leave yourself a voicemail if you have to. Small notebook and pencil in the back pocket can do in a pinch if you don't feel like talking to yourself in public.
