Sundays in the park with Shakespeare
Jul. 13th, 2008 10:47 pmBoxed for The Once and Future King today--great show, some fantastic ensemble moments and funny, too. Afterward a man who had wandered in off the lake to see the show told Shana, as he was leaving, that it was "wholly epic!"
Then I went home & was hot & picked raspberries & failed to do anything else productive for half an hour, after which my parents came home & we ate a quick pulled-together dinner & went to see Wooden O's Romeo and Juliet. I fully disagree with some of the choices made--mostly a) the lack of spouses for the older generation, b) making Montague the Prince, which messed several things up, & c) which follows from b), making Romeo part of the peacekeepers. I did however thoroughly enjoy the show, & I thought they did a really wonderful job with it (apart from the above head-scratchery ideas). The conceit was really fascinating (& gave them awesome business with planes!). Acting was good too--Hana Lass was in it (oh my nemesis/idol!) as was Trick Dannaker (Patrick, you should have been there), & generally all very good people.
Still, however, I have not seen a production of R&J that I 100% agree with, which I find interesting, given that I've seen a lot of them by this point. I'm not even as enamored of the play as I am of other Shakespeares, but for some reason I feel vaguely protective of this one, since so many people just get things wrong. (As to why my ideas, many of which have been stolen from other people, should be right, well, I don't know; but they're mine.) I guess I'm not really likely to find one unless I direct it myself, & even then, I'm sure two months after it closes I'll realize something that changes it all; thus is theater.
I'm really looking forward to seeing what Stephanie Shine does with it (& oh my god if I don't get to be in it & work with her I will positively cry)...so far I've enjoyed most of what I've seen her direct, so I'm hopeful. But that's not till January.
Right now it's onward to Alice & LERT's Eight to One! & tomorrow...early training in Redmond. So goodnight!
