TiLT, + extra
Apr. 8th, 2010 11:09 pmIt is already the fourth month of the year--even though I've lived through more than two decades of it, time still baffles me.
I also never wrote here about Ashland, instead just blathering to anyone who would listen about how incredible Hamlet was [in short: it was perfect, which I never say about theater, and it was by far the best production of Shakespeare I've ever seen. I can only explain its awesomeness by saying that I was, sometimes literally, on the edge of my seat and entirely riveted throughout the whole show--and remember, this is Hamlet, a play I know backwards and forwards. I could have quoted half the lines along with Dan Donohue and yet every time he spoke I was surprised. It was a revelation].
Now I'm back, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is gearing up toward tech, and work is swallowing me whole. For DRS, we have our first big Saturday rehearsal this weekend, which will be good as we get to finalize all the transitions. Oh lord. Tech for a musical is terrifying. I am, at least, feeling not useless anymore, which is a plus; but the flipside of that is that I'm suddenly always doing something. This is familiar stage manager territory? I hope? Because a bunch of this musical-stuff is not. Oh well--thank goodness for Erica. (She is my savior, I have said it before and will say it again.)
Work is...madness. I need to be better organized about everything, and I would start to write all my job duties down but I don't have time anymore! (I realized, a few weeks ago, that I really ought to start compiling a workbook of everything I do, because my job is made up of so many tiny little jobs. If I had to quit suddenly or if I got sick or whatever, it would be a disaster...and while it's nice to be needed, that's not really a tenable situation). Oh well. Workbook will have to wait. I spent last week dealing with the spring break camps and this week wrangling enough students to make the spring middleschool show happen (which it will! And I am excited for it!), and on top of that entering and organizing procurement forms for the auction. I have been hearing horror stories about how wild the auction gets and how much work it creates.
The auction is like a giant looming doom-laden cloud slowly encroaching on my sanity.
And yet we soldier on, and even, occasionally, remember to do cash counts so we can actually use the money we make. Geez. With an only slightly ironic grin, I say, It's a crisis every day at a local non-profit arts organization!
In mycopious amounts of free time, I've been either staying up way too late watching Doctor Who with the Who crowd, or hiding away reading romance novels. They are for letting my brain go fallow for a while, and also for research, since I have decided to write salacious romance novels to pay off my student loans. Ok. I guess I should start of TilT with that, then, and afterwards sleep!
Things I Love Thursday (late-night madness edition):
* Romance novels from the library. Free, stupid, highly entertaining, I don't need anything more than that! Actually I should just say "novels from the library" because lately I have also been catching up on old favorites and new novels in favorite series. I guess I should just say THE LIBRARY.
* Salsa dancing! Oh my goodness yes! I went last Friday with Erica and Luke and some other Bathhouse teens, and spent whatever time I was not dancing pushing Erica on the floor to dance with other people. But oh man--it felt so good to just dance for three hours straight! Especially with a particular guy who I danced with about six times, because holy crap he was a good lead, and it was so much fun. Dance dance dance! Why do I always forget how much pure fun that is?
* Doctor Who. I saw the new episode last week and...and I like him. I do! I was sad that Ten left, but Eleven has won me over with fish sticks & custard and goofball antics and being a madman with a box. Beautiful! I can't wait for Saturday night and episode two! I am obsessed.
* The Vacuum Project - with Heroes Everywhere. It's a one-day play; we come in with lines memorized, rehearse, tech and perform all in one day, four short plays. It's April 17th. I am in a play called "Standing By," which is about theater interns and is possibly the funniest thing I have read all year--god, I love it. I was literally laughing out loud nearly the entire time. (Possibly one reason why I find it hilarious is that the play they're interning on is "Three Sisters," and I have a line about how fucking sick I am of hearing them talk about Moscow, why don't they just GO ALREADY?! I may have died a little from glee.)
* (Relatedly) upcoming auditions! I have one this weekend for Balagan's summer play "Greetings from Styx," which I am overly excited about: it's based on Ovid's Metamorphoses, and it's a bunch of new short plays, and they want an ensemble of people who are good with movement and puppetry and Oh, can I just say, I would be so good for this. Please please please. I also have an audition next weekend for Stop Kiss, which darling Anna is directing at Odd Duck, which would also be super exciting! Fingers crossed I get to act this year more.
* Hot water bottles. Apparently Seattle is giving us winter in April (did it hail today, or was that just me? Right after it was gorgeous and sunny?) and my basement is freezing, but my toes never are!
So on that note, I am going to go make myself a hot water bottle and try to sleep, before waking up early and starting this madness all over again. Here we go.
