i'm feeling a little chalant...
Dec. 1st, 2006 06:55 pmIntellectually I know that "nonplussed" means perplexed, bewildered, to be thrown by something. But it sounds so much like "nonchalant" that whenever I read or write the word "nonplussed" it doesn't mean to me what it ought to.
Possibly because if one were "plussed"--although that's not a word in that sense, but then neither is "chalant"--if one were "plussed," I feel like it ought to be a synonym for "perturbed."
Fortunately English isn't based on what I feel like words should mean. It still throws me, though. (One might say I was...nonplussed.)

Apr. 21st, 2005 07:30 pm....so. I'm applying to be a writing consultant, right? And this involves, among other things, editing papers. Ok, I can do that. I like doing that, making little marks on paper and weird marginal comments and telling people that their grammar is terrible. But...well. Are we supposed to be nice about it? Because, really...the paper I'm editing for my application--is this supposed to be an average college-level paper? Because it's terrible. Maybe (ok, probably) I'm an effete linguistic and grammar snob, BUT. Please. I was writing papers better than this in seventh grade. How am I supposed to say "your paper sucks, can I just rewrite it for you?" nicely? Bah.
...ohgawd. I really AM an effete grammar snob, aren't I? I'm doomed. *hides*
